Knoxville Transit Tweaks Cashless Plan, Welcomes Exact Change Payments
Knoxville, Tennessee – In an exciting update for local commuters, Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) has begun to shift its approach to fare payments. On September 25, KAT announced that it is altering its initial plan to go completely cashless, and the changes are set to make travel a bit more flexible for riders.
Rethinking the Cashless Strategy
The initial proposal was to eliminate cash payments entirely, but KAT has decided to allow passengers to use exact change in fare boxes starting in 2025. This means that although cash transactions are on the way out, those who still prefer to pay with coins will have that option!
So, what does this mean for commuters? Simply put, starting in January 2025, riders will be able to board with exact change and pay $1 per trip without the need for transfers. However, it’s important to note that paper tickets will no longer be an option.
Timeline for Changes
Let’s break down the timeline so you know what to expect: KAT previously scheduled the launch of their new payment app, katpay, for October 23, with an immediate requirement for exact change if the plan passed. That’s still in place! However, now riders won’t have to use exact change right off the bat.
Currently, ticket buybacks are set to begin on October 23 and will run until February 2, 2025. The window for purchasing paper tickets has been pushed back, with the last day to do so now set for December 2. Additionally, riders will still be able to use any remaining paper tickets until December 31 of this year. This gives everyone ample time to adjust to the changes!
Why the Change?
KAT’s decision to move towards a cashless transit system stems from a necessity for upgrades. The existing fare boxes have been deemed obsolete by the manufacturer, prompting the need for these new measures to ensure a smoother experience for travelers.
Benefits of Going Cashless
Even with these changes, commuters can still benefit from cashless options. Using the transit payment app or a tappable fare card is expected to offer better deals, particularly through fare capping. For example, travelers will not have to worry about spending more than $2 a day or $30 over three days. Those eligible for discounted fares have even better news, as they will cap at a mere $1 each day or $15 in thirty days. What a steal!

These revisions haven’t been finalized just yet! The updated plan is scheduled to be discussed during the upcoming meeting of the Knoxville Transportation Authority Board, which will take place on Thursday, September 26 at 3 p.m. in the Small Assembly Room of the City-County Building. Although this meeting isn’t a public hearing, KAT has assured the community that anyone interested is welcome to attend.
