Knox County Commissioners Say Goodbye

Knoxville, TN – In an emotional meeting held last week, five Knox County Commissioners bid farewell to their colleagues and the community as they wrapped up their time in office. This gathering welcomed not just the remaining commissioners but also members of the audience, who witnessed heartfelt goodbyes and remembrances from Dasha Lundy, Carson Dailey, John Schoonmaker, Richie Beeler, and Kyle Ward.

The farewell was not scheduled, making the sentiments expressed all the more poignant. Each of the outgoing commissioners took a moment to share their thoughts, reflecting on their experiences and the connections they made during their tenure. The five departing members will be honored with a dinner alongside the newly elected commissioners, allowing them to celebrate their service together.

Reflections on Service

Carson Dailey, who represented South Knox District 9 for two terms, received a special acknowledgment from Vice Mayor Tommy Smith. Smith remarked on their shared commitment to the area, describing Dailey as a co-caretaker of South Knoxville. Dailey’s efforts to clean up the community earned him a unique gift from Smith – a sign found on a county roadside. This token symbolizes Dailey’s passion for keeping the district tidy.

During the meeting, each departing commissioner took their turn to address the audience. Richie Beeler, a minister, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve alongside his colleagues. He praised Lundy as a “warrior for her community,” highlighting her dedication to local causes. He also commended Schoonmaker and Dailey for their outstanding performances in office, stating, “No one could ever have done this better.” Beeler concluded by calling Kyle Ward “a great friend and a brother” since the beginning of their partnership.

Expressing her deep feelings, Lundy remarked, “I love you all. I’m very grateful to sit in this seat and grateful to be here.” In a brief address, Ward acknowledged the uniqueness of each commission member, emphasizing the bond they formed despite differences in opinion. “We’ve become family,” he stated, celebrating the camaraderie fostered during their time together.

Memories and Accomplishments

John Schoonmaker, who served for nine and one-half years, fondly recalled his appointment and the journey he undertook. He expressed appreciation for the interactions he had with other commissioners and particularly with former Knox County Commissioner Charles Busler. “This is the best job I ever had,” Schoonmaker declared, wishing the next group of commissioners an equally enjoyable experience.

Reflecting on his leadership, Dailey mentioned his deep commitment to making decisions that benefited Knox County. He noted that, despite heated discussions and disagreements in meetings, the team always walked away united. “It’s forgotten when we walk out that door,” he remarked, highlighting the respect maintained between members.

Final Thoughts from Leadership

Kicking off the farewell speeches, Knox County Chairwoman Terry Hill, who has announced she will not seek reelection, shared her thoughts on the challenges faced during her tenure. Hill noted significant events in the past four years, including a devastating tornado, an unusual snowstorm, the passage of the Advance Knoxville initiative, and ongoing negotiations regarding the ambulance contract.

The emotional goodbyes showcased the strong connections formed among the Knox County Commissioners and their dedication to the community. With changes in leadership approaching, the outgoing commissioners leave behind a legacy of service and collaboration – a reminder of the impact they had during their time in office.
