Knoxville Poised for New Bus Routes: Free Rides for Two Weeks
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The city of Knoxville is about to launch a revamped network of bus routes that promises to enhance public transportation significantly. Starting on August 26, 2024, the Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) will unveil its new service, which has been in the works since 2021 under the KAT Reimagined project. To help riders familiarize themselves with the new routes, KAT is offering free fares for the first two weeks of service.
Major Changes with KAT Reimagined
After many discussions and planning sessions, the new bus network aims to improve reliability and expand accessibility to jobs throughout the city. This innovative system includes 20 new routes that were approved in April this year. According to KAT, the new routes will increase public transportation access by allowing an additional 12,000 residents to utilize bus services every 15 minutes. Notably, riders will be able to reach an average of 18,300 jobs within 45 minutes — a 19% increase in job accessibility compared to the previous system.
Enhanced Sunday Services
In an effort to increase service availability, bus operations on Sundays are set to rise by 150%. This change will provide more flexibility for those who work or engage in activities during the weekends. Riders can find detailed maps and schedules of the revamped routes on the KAT website.
New Route Features
One notable change is the introduction of a new downtown connector route, which will operate every 10-12 minutes and replace the current free trolley service. An added convenience for university students, another eight buses per hour will connect downtown to the University of Tennessee. Students and staff at UT will be able to travel free of charge thanks to a partnership established with the city.

For those looking for budget-friendly travel options, discounted fares are available for seniors aged 65 and older, Medicare cardholders, and individuals with disabilities.
